Pat Tillman once said, “Somewhere inside, we hear a voice. It leads us in the direction of who we wish to become. But it is up to us whether or not to follow.” These words sum up the personality and legacy of former Arizona Cardinals linebacker and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Tillman’s decision to put a promising football career on hold in order to join the military in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks shocked many, as did his tragic death while in Iraq.
While his death garnered a lot of media attention, his family and friends wanted to show the other side of Pat, the man who gave his time and support to various charities within his community, such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, the March of Dimes, and providing hopeful and insightful words to students across the Phoenix valley. It’s with this philosophy that the Pat Tillman Foundation was created, to invest in military veterans and their spouses through academic scholarships and help build a diverse community of leaders to help others.
So far, the organization has reached 460 veterans and family members who are Tillman Scholars, awarded $14 million in academic scholarships and support, and have recipients attending over 100 universities.
