Gila Herd Foundation of Arizona

Gila Herd Foundation of Arizona

The Gila Mustangs of Arizona are descendants of Spanish conquistadors’ equines from the 15th century. They are a unique herd that has learned to adapt to the desert climate, with an interesting dynamic of moving 'as one'. The Gila mustangs should still be living in Southern Arizona, but because some considered them to be a nuisance, in 1996 the entire Gila herd was gathered and removed from their Arizona habitat to taken to South Dakota.

Barbara Joe Rasmussen spent two months in South Dakota overseeing the adoptions of several of these horses to stop them from being auctioned or slaughtered. With the preservation of this unique horses in mind, Ms. Ramussen founded the Gila Herd Foundation to protect these horses.

Arizona Charitable Giving is a labor of love created to make it easier for the residents of our great state to search and find local charities that touch their hearts. We share selected charities and events to a large distribution list of Arizona residents via email and social media on a regular basis. Any qualified charitable organizations are welcome to submit their profile to be included in our on-going outreach efforts.

Thank you to our sponsors this month.
